What does 'fast food' mean to us?

Years ago, we had fast food choices and restaurant choices. Now we have fast food places disguised as restaurants or vice versa. Name a place.....Qdoba, Chipotle, Noodles, 5 Guys, Smashburger, Daphne's, Tokyo Joe's, Subway, Little Anita's and we could go on and on. What do they have in common? Stand in line, order and move along. Anyone of them could fit into the food court in any mall. Waitstaff were taken out of the equation and self service was put in place just like gas stations.

Fast food is the term given to food that can be prepared and served very quickly. Think about the set-up, design and layout of each of the above listed places. All are basically the same aren't they? This is not to say this is good or bad, just don't claim to be a restaurant or grill, when you are just a nicer fast food joint. To be a restaurant, you need to have waitstaff, right? This is definitely up for debate and what you to believe to be fast food and a restaurant.

When you go out to eat at a restaurant, do you want to be waited on? When going for fast food, do you expect to stand in line, order and grab your own drink? Again, does fast food have no waitstaff and a restaurant have waitstaff? Or is there a new classification? What do you think?
