Fast-casuals are those fast-food chains and independent restaurants that are more upscale than the usual fast-food places (like Wendy’s and Burger King), but are cheaper than a traditional sit-down eatery. They tend to focus on more healthful, specialty food that’s moderately priced, yet still served quickly. Fast-casuals are still a small segment of the market, but are a rapidly growing one (bakery-café, Asian restaurants, Mexican eateries, and noodle specialty shops are some of the most popular in this particular genre or field).
And there’s no end in sight (at least for a good while-In 2010, fast-casuals pulled in $18.9 billion-an increase of six percent, according to research group Technomic).
Fast-casuals have no drive-through service; indoor table seating’s limited. They’re also often perceived to have better food quality, prices and higher-end décor. But some of the these factors are changing; some fast-casual chains, such as Panera Bread, are now providing drive-through service; others are trying home deliveries.
Keeping New Year’s food resolutions
Eating healthier. Losing weight. Maintaining weight loss. These three have always been very popular New Year’s resolutions, but busy schedules and “diet food” that just doesn’t fill you up can all conspire to sabotage your goals.
Here are two options to try:
1. Low-fat dairy snacks-They provide a good source of protein that will help keep you feeling fuller longer, yet while also providing calcium and other important nutrients. For example, try an apple (or apple slices) with peanut butter, particularly the crunchy, chunky kind. (not only does this taste good; it’s good for you!). And an apple will take the edge off hunger pangs. Small, portion-controlled servings of low-fat cheese that don’t need instant refrigeration and can even travel in your purse, backpack or tote bag is also ideal for taking off those hunger pangs while still supplying you with calcium and protein.
2. Get-and use-a few Glad To Go containers-They’re reusable, idea for lunch and snacks (a distinctive feature is the detachable 1.5 oz cup that snaps into the lid). Not only can you bring salads, fruit and/or homemade meals; you can now carry along just the right amount of low-cal dressing, sauce, or topping as needed. The entire line has a variety of sizes for every type of lunch imaginable; these containers are also ideal for potlucks and “dinner on the go.” Check out www.glad.com for more info.
