Fashionista next door: Suzy of Beneath The Glass

For today’s “fashionista next door” segment, we are featuring one astounding style icon; Suzy Pilaczynski of Beneath The Glass.

Suzy had always captured my attention when it comes to her unique & one of a kind sense of style. Her distinctive fashion and daring ensembles along  with her tattoos might get some of us a little intimidated but don’t let that stop you from getting to know her, for she is someone to definitely get to know if you love fashion.

Now, let’s all sit back and relax and get to know how Suzy and her love for fashion came about.

1.) How would you define your personal style?
This is always a hard question for me to answer because I don't really have a particular style I follow- if I like it, I wear it, regardless of whether it's "trendy" or in season. I like to mashup different styles together and take pieces that normally wouldn't go together to create new looks. If I had to be a bit more specific though, I would say I tend to lean towards styles that have more of an edge or unique qualities- crazy prints, bold colors, mixing prints, lots of studs, fringe, bohemian vibes- these are all things I look for when shopping or dressing. But I also don't shy away from feminine things- I just like to put my own spin on them!

2.) What/ who inspired you to blog/vlog about fashion & how did it come about?
When I worked as a Visual Merchandiser for Forever 21 (about 2009), my Field Visual Manager would give us fashion "homework" occasionally, such as researching trends, designers, etc. She liked my reviews and style and said I should be a style blogger. At the time, I really didn't know that personal style blogs existed, I assumed any fashion related blogs were found on like, style.com or bigger sites like that. I had no idea this whole other world existed where people posted outfit photos and such. Coming from a relatively small town where fashion is pretty much a foreign concept, I jumped at the opportunity of being able to interact with others who I could relate to stylewise- at work I was always the one who stood out and wore things that are considered "out there", but online I'm relatively tame to what I've seen. The first bloggers I was inspired by was of course Rumi, and Liz from Late Afternoon, because they were the first ones I discovered. Since then, I've found loads of other bloggers who are a source of inspiration for me.

3.) What are some of the current fashion trends this season that you are in love with right now?
Honestly, I really never pay attention to "seasonal" or "current" trends, since fashion always ends up coming around full circle eventually. I remember I had bought velvet leggings from Forever 21 and everyone thought I was crazy, but then a year later, velvet came in season and was everywhere. But to answer your question, I guess what I'm loving most right now is more bohemian/vintage inspired pieces- lots of crochet, fur (faux, of course), maxi dresses/skirts, crushed velvet, tapestry prints, etc. And I've always loved chokers, so I'm glad they've come back in the spotlight again.

4.) If there was a huge flood that washes away your closet, what's the 1 important/ beloved item that you wish to save?
Only 1? That's next to impossible to decide! But some of my favorite items would be my vintage ethnic hat (seen in the attached photo), silk patchwork kimono and my Surface to Air shoes that took me ages to save up enough money to buy, my first and only really big splurge on a designer item.

5.) How would you define fashion in your own words?
Fashion is supposed to fun and not taken so seriously! One of my pet peeves is people who are afraid of trying new things, afraid of standing out or being judged. Everyone is an individual and therefore shouldn't worry about what others think about their style. It really is an art, and everyone expresses themselves differently. You only have one life to live, do you want to blend in or be remembered for standing out? I, personally, would rather leave a lasting impression. Just like celebrities- whether it's good or bad, at least it's unforgettable. Remember the D&G dress JLo wore to the Oscars? She got so much shit for it, but she got everyone talking, didn't she? That's what fashion should be like- fun, experimental and memorable.
