How do you make a change in the world while still being fashionABLE? Barrett and Rachel Ward are, with a line of beautiful scarves and leather goods. The collection perfectly named FashionABLE works with women to start small business cooperatives while also partnering with businesses who have fair wage and hiring practices for women.
While living in Ethiopia, fashionABLE founder Barrett and his wife Rachel saw firsthand how extreme poverty forced so many young girls and women to make awful choices to earn money. When speaking to these women, they told him they wanted an opportunity to earn a living, not to be given charity, so he created a business that would give them a job. By providing jobs, the fashionABLE approach has changed how people think about solving extreme poverty. With those beginnings in mind, each piece is named for one of the heroic women fashionABLE works with, and has a part of her story attached.
Bezuayhu is one of the FashionABLE carftwomen. Bezuayhu: “I am now 19 years old. My parents had passed away and I used to live with my aunts and grandparents. They always wanted me to work and not to go to school. So, I came to the city, and there I came to this life of prostitution. Now, it feels so good to get up in the morning and say I am going to work. It feels so good to have a scarf named after me. I’m so proud to be called a scarf maker.”
By purchasing a vibrant and fun accessory, you are ABLE to provide opportunity and choices for the amazing craftswomen making these pieces all while adding a great piece to your wardrobe.
