Pet Fashion is a growing industry pet Couturier and proprietor of Bandit Rubio Designs proves how luxury for pets is taking on a whole new meaning. I caught up with the designer at Fashion Week Brooklyn 2014 and here's what he had to say.
Getthebuzz716: Tell me a little about your brand. Where are you from?
Bandit Rubio Designs: My name is Anthony Rubio and I am a Pet Couturier and proprietor of Bandit Rubio Designs. My creations are collectable one of a kind works of art which I personally create mostly by hand, hence couture. This brand is a luxury line for pets geared at clients who love and celebrate their four legged companions as extensions of their families. My clients will spare no expense and does very fashion savvy want to have their pets exemplify their fashionista life style.
Getthebuzz716: What does fashion week Brooklyn mean to you?
Bandit Rubio Designs: Fashion Week Brooklyn is a wonderful event which takes place over several days bringing to the runways the presentations of gifted and talented designers of any age and gender. This is an opportunity for these artists to showcase the best of their work representing not just the Borough but the city of New York while at the same time inspiring our youth to follow their dreams and aspire to become a part of the proverbial fabric of the fashion industry which the grand metropolis is so famous for. This year Fashion Week Brooklyn was officially acknowledged and celebrated by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams who voiced his desire to bring back to Brooklyn the fashion trade which once thrived and generated the industry and which would now stimulate the economy. To me, this being my second opportunity to present at Fashion Week Brooklyn, it is the opportunity to share with the world and educate people the love we have for our pets. It’s a venue to display my art which is still very new and an unexpected pleasure for some to view.
Getthebuzz716: How would you define your Brand?
Bandit Rubio Designs: While there are many companies and vendors who sell merchandise and apparel for pets I had to make a decision to either join the masses or create my own niche. I chose to venture into a new frontier creating my own specific category of apparel for pets. Having a formal education in fashion design I looked into the human fashion industry and realized that there was a possible market for Luxury apparel in the realm of Couture. My brand is about luxury high quality goods incorporating the very best in materials combined with the meticulous skills of an artisan to produce much sought after works of art for those who would spare no expense on their pets.
Getthebuzz716: How long does it usually take you to construct a piece?
Bandit Rubio Designs: It usually takes several days and up to a week to create one of my creations.
Getthebuzz716: Describe the general process you go through to design and what’s your favorite part about conceptualizing a design?
Bandit Rubio Designs: There are several steps in the process starting with finding an inspiration to then depicting it on paper then translating that into an actual functioning garment. I can’t stress enough how important the safety and comfort is for the pet. I develop a structure to which I start draping the textiles. Once the main garment is done I start the decorative process which can be done utilizing all sorts of trims, flora, gems etc. I have also taken to creating hats which have now become a standard element. I sat down one day and conceptualized the hat frames which I would manipulate to take on various shapes again taking into consideration comfort and now they are very much in demand.
Getthebuzz716: What matters to you most as a designer?
Bandit Rubio Designs: I can’t emphasize the importance of originality because as does happen in the human fashion trade there will always be knock offs
Getthebuzz716: What do you believe makes a quality design?
Bandit Rubio Designs: What I believe makes a quality design is the use of the very best in materials and having the consideration to know how to edit and make sure that the final outcome is a garment that looks and feels great on the pet. It takes extensive education and practice to cultivate a skill and talent to actually develop an original one of a kind creation. I can’t emphasize the importance of originality because as does happen in the human fashion trade there will always be knock offs
Getthebuzz716: How would you define the style your line exemplifies?
Bandit Rubio Designs: My style in design exemplifies the craftsmanship and artistry of old world artisans very much as there used to be tailors, shoemakers, and such. Instead of relying on machines or assembly lines it’s about actually using my hands and imagination to create a finished product that meet high standards.
Getthebuzz716: What are some of your fashion goals?
Bandit Rubio Designs: My designing had first started as a hobby but quickly picked up demand and I gained great worldwide notoriety. I was recently awarded the title of Top Pet Designer of 2014 at an annual Pet Fashion event here in New York. A documentary was filmed last summer about what I do and was televised worldwide and I am still getting offers from various production companies wanting me to jump on board with television projects. This is all exciting and inviting but I am no actor and while they have filmed me and expressed that I am a natural I welcome the offers but won't get too vested or get my hopes to high until I hear sign the dotted line. I recently ventured into men's ties using unconventional materials. They are called Naughty Ties and whenever I am wearing one people feel the need to get closer to investigate and pay compliments. I would like to further evolve as a designer creating goods that are not necessarily available and have to as of yet be developed.
Getthebuzz716: What other experience do you have in the fashion industry (stylist, retail, marketing, etc.)?
Bandit Rubio Designs: You may inquire about any other fashion related experience that I may have and I would tell you that in my early years I was in retail and styling while in college. In the recent years though I did design the costumes for my two Chihuahuas which were characters on the Broadway stage for a play titled "Dog Park". I live, love eat and drink fashion attending the runway shows at the famous New York Fashion Week seasonally.
Getthebuzz716: What are your favorite patterns/materials [prints] to work with and why?
Bandit Rubio Designs: My favorite materials to work with are gems and fabrics that most other designers may shy away from. I like a challenge so for instance I was front and center, years ago, dressing my dog in Faux Fur. Of course I was asked why I would use faux fur to which I would respond that it’s a way of telling the world that they should not kill animals for fur but instead use faux fur which comes in various colors, textures and quality.
