Fur is the new black. The luxurious material that elegantly (albeit with its won share of controversy) demonstrates the high style and cozy warmth, took the center stage during New York Fashion Week. The soft fox furs, rich mink furs and even rabbit and raccoon furs were prevalent in the Fall/Winter 2013 collections of designers like BCBG Max Azria, Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren, Monique Lhuiliier, J Mendel, Badgley Mischka, Bibhu Mohapatra, Michael Kors and Rachel Zoe. These designers used the fur not only in jackets and coats but as accents in the dresses, gowns, cowls and in accessories.
Max Azria kept the casual vibe with two tone long fur vests and leather jackets with fur collars. Vera Wang had soft fox fur wraps and capes and Monique Lhuillier had long haired dyed colorblock fur vests. Badgley Mischka had Hitchcock muse Kim Novak inspired femme fatale vibe with fur trimmed necklines on sheath dresses and fur shrugs over slim fitted skirts. Perhaps the most prominent display of furs was during J Mendel Fall 2013 collection that had sumptuous fur coats, mink trimmed biker jackets jackets that enchanted with their subtle opulence. Former J.Mendel design direcor Bibhu Mohapatra also got his fur expertise at the New York FAshion Week with fur scarves tied with jeweled brooches, fur coats and fur accented jackets.
For people morally opposed to furs, there could be great faux fur options emulating the style and polish of the high end designer furs. But New York Fashion Week showed that when it comes to high end couture, nothing can replace the real fur. There is a glamour and grandeur in a fur piece that will always have people clamoring for more. New York Fashion Week concluded on February 14th, showcasing the Fall/Winter 2013 collections by over 90 designers.
