We don’t know about you, but in the fashion world, the big brouhaha this week is the Academy Awards this Sunday and what all the celebrities will wear.
Trends predictors say that labels such as Marchesa with its architectural styles and Alexander McQueen, who just committed suicide in February, will make their marks on the red carpet. (You can find Marchesa at Neiman Marcus at Fashion Show mall and Alexander McQueen at Wynn Las Vegas.) Bright colors in orange, teal and fuchsia should overwhelm the typical blacks and reds of the night. And for jewelry, after a season of low-key accoutrements last year, expect to see a cavalcade of diamonds and colored gemstones on the carpet.
If seasons past are any indication of what we can expect to see, then we know that the red carpet will not disappoint this year. We’d like to hear who you are looking forward to seeing on the red carpet, what styles you think they will wear and whether you watch the Academy Awards for the fashions or the winners. Drop us a note in the comments section below.
In the meantime, here’s a look at some of the nominees for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress and the designers they wore in the past. And here are links to last year’s Academy Awards fashions and this year's Golden Globe Awards fashions if you need a refresher course. We’ll be writing about as many fashions, where you can find these looks in Vegas and the actresses who wear them as possible on Sunday.
Best Actress nominee Sandra Bullock from “The Blind Side” can be good and bad in the fashion department. At the 2004 Academy Awards, she wore Oscar de la Renta (available at Wynn Las Vegas) while at the Golden Globes earlier this month, she donned Bottega Venetta (at the Shoppes at the Palazzo).
Helen Mirren, whose performance in “The Last Station” garnered her an Oscar nod, wore a red Georges Chakra gown to the 2008 Academy Awards.
Carey Mulligan from “An Education” donned Nina Ricci, available at Outfit at Wynn Las Vegas, at the Golden Globe Awards.
Best Supporting Actress Penélope Cruz, nominated for her performance in “Nine,” typically wears Giorgio Armani Prive, available at Via Bellagio, or Chanel, at Encore Las Vegas, for her red carpet appearances.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, nominated for “Crazy Heart,” wore RM by Roland Mouret, a brand found at Outfit at Wynn Las Vegas, to the Golden Globe Awards.
