Fashion's Night Out is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year in the fashion world outside of the various fashion weeks. Successfully wrapping up its fourth season in 2012, Fashion's Night Out was celebrated in over 500 cities within the United States and in 30 cities in other countries around the world. It is with much regret that the originators behind this spectacular event have announced an indefinite hiatus for Fashion's Night Out in the United States.
Fashion's Night Out originated in 2009 at the height of the economic recession. Retailers and consumers alike were struggling financially and measures needed to be taken to stabilize the retail industry. Fashion's Night Out was created wholeheartedly to celebrate retailers and encourage consumers to shop. Celebrated on the Thursday preceding the spring and summer showcases at New York Fashion Week, Fashion's Night Out was known to set the stage for all things fashion in the month of September.
Last year in Dallas alone, over six locations participated in Fashion's Night Out putting forth unforgettable fashion shows, retailer discounts and fabulous after parties--but was the one-night fashion extravaganza costing retailers too much?
Rumors have circulated for years that retailers failed to see the profit of participating in Fashion's Night Out; if anything, offering deep discounts, free products and in some cases drinks, appetizers and entertainment were often a bust for some shops. This was not supposed to be the focus of the event however over the years, this is how Fashion's Night Out evolved and ultimately what the consumer expected.
Only time will tell what the real reason is behind Fashion's Night Out's indefinite hiatus. Until such time, fashionistas can reminisce and rejoice gladly for four great years of the one-night celebration commemorating shopping and the retail industry--it was indisputably a great run.
