Fashion’s Night Out takes a break in the U.S.

Fashion’s Night Out, the global event all fashionistas looked forward to, kicking off NYFW in September, will now be taking a break in the United States, according to “Women’s Wear Daily”.

This September the hair, makeup and beauty events combined with hot music, sexy cocktails and celebrity sightings will be missing in cities across the nation, as Fashion’s Night Out will not occur in the States, only in select locales internationally.

Created in New York City at the peak of the 2009 recession, Fashion’s Night Out, a celebration of shopping, was a temporary solution to a failing economy with the hopes of boosting sales in the Big Apple.

Consumers ate it up and by 2012; Fashion’s Night Out had spread to stores in over 500 cities across the U.S. and 30 worldwide with big name celebrity sightings, signings and endorsements to lure in shoppers.

Shopping’s celebration turned into a giant party or “street festival” with store executives questioning whether or not Fashion’s Night Out was worth the expense. Combined with the complaints of many designers’ who were staging shows at the same time, the sponsors of Fashion’s Night Out, Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designer’s of America and NYC & Co, agreed to go on hiatus to refocus on business than one big night in September.

Stephen Kolb, CEO of the CFDA, feels that Fashion’s Night Out served its purpose in New York City and its success wasn’t just measured in numbers, it also raised a great deal of money for charity and brought a focus to the hard work and many facets of the fashion industry, a fact Mayor Bloomberg reiterated.

Fashion’s Night Out brought great energy, optimism and enthusiasm to the city’s retailers, who make up a thriving part of our economy. We can always count on fashion industry leaders to use their creativity and savvy to benefit New York City — whether they are helping us recover from a national recession, a natural disaster or whatever the next challenge may be.

No word on what year Fashion’s Night Out will (or if it will) return to New York City and the United States, however FNO will continue internationally, with 19 countries participating in 2013, and two first timers, the Ukraine and Thailand.
