It's been said that superstar Rihanna can wear anything.....but can she really? The singer was spotted out in London during Fashion Week to debut her new clothing line with River Island as her first stab at being a fashion designer, and many don't seem too pleased with her efforts. Rihanna, in promoting for her new line, opted to wear a pair of "double top" jeans from the collection during a party, and when pictures hit the internet, the world went crazy with criticism.
Many have coined this $150 double jeaned look "trashy", "ghetto", and "ugly", according to social media sites, as well as articles about the collection. The jeans have an urban style to them, similiar to the popular, yet unattractive sagging that many males wear on a day to day basis. A large number or males, especially younger ones, wear their pants below their waist, and many times even below their bottom, revealing their boxers, shorts, or whatever is underneath. This style Rihanna has designed has been strongly compared to the unappealing sagging look, and criticized accordingly. While some believe that the look works for Rihanna, and that it pays homage to a street culture that should be respected, many have expressed their feelings about the jeans paying tribute to a "ghetto" culture, and that Rihanna is contributing to self disrespecting clothing, promoting others to continue dressing in a manner that degrades themselves.
The jeans have a double effect, with a darker wash on the surface, and a light wash peeking through at the hips. The rolled up legs of the jeans complement the slightly baggy fit, making the jeans a more casual, relaxed fit. Rihanna paired hers with a simple white cropped top that revealed her abs, and glammed up the look with black sandals. The jeans have already sold out in the UK. Will this look be a hit in the US? And while this look may work for Rihanna, will it work for others?
