Fashion inspired by Gustav Klimt?

Fashionistas, I was thrifting at a metro Atlanta thrift store and luckily scored this lovely, ultra feminine, top in a chiffon type material inspired by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt and in particular his lovely painting The Kiss.

Since I was so delighted to find this rare printed top, I was curious to see what else I could find out there, with the help of the Internet of course.

Surfing away at various sites, such as eBay and Zazzle (has the most amazing art inspired items!) I was able to find T-shirts, a skirt and even a wallet with Klimt’s artwork or even with a painting of Klimt in his garden.

So what is it exactly that we love so much about Gustav Klimt’s work that it has inspired art and fashion to this very day?

As part of Vienna’s Secessionist art movement, running contemporary to Art Nouveau on the time line, Klimt was famous for the heavy ornamentation and stylization of his otherwise very realistic work.

Extremely fond of using black and gold as well as jewel tones of ruby red, sapphire blue, emerald green, amethyst purple and so on, his work often used Egyptian, classical Greek/Roman and geometric shapes.

His painting The Kiss incorporates his fondness for erotic themes, the use of black, gold, shades of saffron, those wonderful jewel tones as well as spring flowers, to which Klimt adds rectangular, triangular and circular shapes on a vast gold speckled background.

No wonder The Kiss is one of the most commonly used works of art to inspire the fashion industry as well as housewares, in particular decorative rugs!

Take a look at what I’m talking about in my slideshow of these wonderful fashion items as well as Klimt himself!
