Fashion: How to mix cobalt, emerald green, and that pesky tangerine tango (Photos)

Colors have been flying fast and furious for the last few fashion seasons. One minute it was all about tangerine, then suddenly every one was making cobalt-themed boards on pinterest. Recently Pantone revealed THE color of 2013: Emerald Green. It espresses a feeling of springlike freshness, lush lawns, green economy, sustainability, Oz the Great and Powerful, and that gorgeous dress that Kiera Knightley wore in Atonement.

The thing is? What if you invested heavily in Tangerine Tango last year? And what if you then went on to snap up multiple cobalt blue accessories and clothing items? Should you throw them out or drop them all off at Goodwill? (Or send them to me...)

No, ladies. No.

I spent some time looking through fashion images (I work so hard for you guys!) and I realized that we can use that color-blocking trend from last year and start building outfits. Technically, emerald and tangerine tango can go together in one outfit. If you throw the cobalt in, make it a shoe. Cobalt and tangerine tango can dance together, but keep the emerald as jewelry. Cobalt and emerald can happen, and then throw the tangerine tango in as a belt.

The point is, while Pantone may decide the overall color for the season, it's up to you to make a decision on whether or not you want to wear it. Also, just because a color is 'out', doesn't mean that you throw away everything that you just bought. With careful planning and ruthless curation, every season you can make wise decision that allow you to build a colorful, flexible wardrobe that expresses your own innate creativity.

Cobalt plus Tangerine plus Emerald? Oh my!
