I have kinky/curly hair. It's not something I'm ashamed of, it's just how my hair grows. I don't like perms (burning, they smell, too expensive), I don't want a weave, and I won't wear a wig. When I was a kid, not having straight hair was a crime against God and country, but these days people are a little more laid back if you're hair twists instead of bounces.
One of the greatest achievements is being able to go to a salon that specializes in 'dealing' with textured (some like to say nappy, and you may do so now) hair. I once went to Amoy Pitters' salon, and my hair looked gorgeous afterwards. her stylist did a wash, deep conditioner, and then a 2 strand twist and put me under the dryer. When she finished I had a very pretty and soft natural hairstyle with no extra hair added for $100 (and don't forget to tip).
I recently found out that Miss Jessie's haircare products (founded by Miko and TiTi Branch) now has a 'curl bar' here in New York. In fact, there's a 15% off special for the month of February. Much like blow out and braid bars, you can go in and get a treatment specifically designed to maximize the beauty of your hair type and leave in a reasonable amount of time. And it's not just about any one type of person, unless you count curly heads as a 'type'. I'm definitely going to check it out.
Miss Jessie's Curl Bar is open Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1pm to 8pm, and walk-ins are welcome. If you'd like an appointment at Ms. Pitters' salon Amoy Couture Hair, you need to make a reservation.
