Fashion designer Lily Pulitzer dies at 81

Fashion designer Lily Pulitzer, whose iconic patterns and bubbly designs have made her a fashion staple since the 1960's, passed away today at the age of 81.

Having grown up in a wealthy family in NY, Pulitzer married the grandson of newspaper mogul Joseph Pulitzer in 1950, and soon after the couple moved to Palm Beach, Fl.

After landing in a mental hospital following bouts of anxiety and nerves, Pulitzer was advised by by a psychiatrist that she needed to occupy herself, so she began juicing citrus grown at her family's groves.

After each work day, she was covered in juice, so she decided to remedy the problem by designing herself a shift dress to match the juice stains. After receiving countless compliments, Pulitzer launched her first fashion line in 1959. The dresses began to outsell the juice and Pulitzer decided to enter the fashion business full-time.

Through the years, Pulitzer's brand expanded to include country club attire, swimsuits, children's clothing, home goods, and a limited selection of menswear. Today, the brand adheres to many of the same stylistic choices of the past, while catering to the needs of modern women.
