The fashion world is awry with the devastating news that fashion designer, L'Wren Scott is dead, apparently by her own hand. Earlier today, Monday, March 17, the assistant to L'Wren Scott received a message from the designer to come to her Manhattan apartment and when she arrived an hour and a half later found her hanging from her own scarf from a doorknob in an apparent suicide. Survival attempts were made by rescue workers with no avail. L'Wren Scott left no note behind leaving people close to her like Mick Jagger who she has been involved with since 2001 devastated and in dismay as to what would have caused the fashion designer to take her own life. Could her suicide have been something that could have been foreseen since she canceled her 2014 London Fashion Week runway show or amidst the rumors of her amassed debt?
Born Luann Bambrough on April 28, 1964, L'Wren Scott was adopted by Mormon parents and raised in Utah where she was discovered by photographer Bruce Weber at a Calvin Klein shoot. From there she graced the catwalks with her long elegant frame at 6'3” of such designers like Chanel and Thierry Mugler all the while learning the behind the scenes of dress making which would lead her into her next career as a fashion designer.
In 1994, L'Wren made her move from in front of the camera to behind the scenes and became the head of PR for Prada and soon afterward began working as a stylist to such celebrities as Sharon Stone, Madonna, and Nicole Kidman. Her understanding of the female form and its grace and elegance led her to design her own line in 2006 (along with the help of Mick Jagger) which was quickly embraced by Hollywood. Not to be pigeon holed into one particular genre, L'Wren Scott's clothing ranged from stylish old Hollywood glam with exquisite detailing and glove like sheaths to new school rock glam full of leather and top hats reminiscent of the Victorian era. And although they may have seemed thematic in a sense, there was one thing that you could always expect from L'Wren Scott, the silhouettes remained the same. All her items were provocatively named and were highly detailed and tailor fitted worthy of their $1.500 and up price tag and worn by Jennifer Lawrence, Oprah, Penelope Cruz and many more such names.
In later years, L'Wren Scott had merged into different aspects of the fashion industry by releasing a shoe collection, a handbag collection, eye wear and sunglasses and collaborations within the beauty industry. Her most recent collaboration was with Bobbi Brown and the Bobbi Brown x L'Wren Scott Amnesia Rose Collection for Spring 2014 which revolved around the actual flowers that were found in the designer's garden.
The news of her death has rocked the fashion industry leaving many in a state of shock. Twitter is currently all abuzz with heartbreaking sentiments to the fallen fashion designer from Marc Jacobs' tweet, 'Rest in peace, L'Wren Scott. You'll forever be missed.', Nina Garcia's tweet, 'Saddened over the loss of the very talented, generous and always gracious L'Wren Scott. You will be missed', Liz Phair's tweet, 'L'wren Scott dead??? No no no. So original beautiful & talented. how can it be??' and Selma Blair’s tweet, 'You were a brilliant original. And loved. And will be forever missed. Dearest L'wren Scott.'
Unfortunately though, some of the tweets are more of a backlash towards the media for their reference to L'Wren Scott as merely Mick Jagger's girlfriend instead of the brilliantly talented and gracefully elegant fashion designer that she was. There's also the reference to how could a 6'3” woman hang herself from a door knob?
Regardless, the world has lost a great talent and L'Wren Scott you will be missed.
