Getthebuzz716 Tell me a little about your brand. Where are you from?
Masha Ruginets: I am established here locally in Toronto; however I went to school in NYC at Parsons. I was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and spent some of my childhood in Israel before moving to Toronto, where I have lived since.
Getthebuzz716: What does fashion week Fashion Art Toronto mean to you?
Masha Ruginets: Fashion Art Toronto is an amazing opportunity for emerging designers to showcase their work, and for me it allowed me to have my first ever runway show in 2013. It was a humbling, and touching moment.
Getthebuzz716:How would you define your Brand?
Masha Ruginets: My brand is a mash-up for different cultures, I grew up in so many different places and that is expressed in my work.
Getthebuzz716: How long does it usually take you to construct a piece?
Masha Ruginets: It depends significantly on the piece, and conceptualizing the design can often take months.
Getthebuzz716: Describe the general process you go through to design and what’s your favorite part about conceptualizing a design?
Masha Ruginets: I am most often inspired by history, and I tend to read novels which focus on history. I often dreaming of a time period different from the one we currently live in, and my design work is heavily inspired by that. Since I am always thinking about what to design next, and how to design it, I end up with a collection that will be often inspired by a few different periods in history. I've also got to say that 'The Smithsonian Fashion: The Definitive History of Costume and Style' comes in very handy with research, and inspiration, it's a good thing the book is like 500 pages long!
Getthebuzz716: What matters to you most as a designer?
Masha Ruginets: The most important thing as a designer is to create. The process itself often matters more than the outcome, mostly because each time the process is a huge learning experience, and after each collection I develop as a designer, and my work gets stronger. Other than that, I like to create pieces that are unique, comfortable and have a bit of edge to them.
Getthebuzz716: What do you believe makes a quality design?
Masha Ruginets: The fit and fabrics used. I cannot understate the importance of starting off with a high quality fabric; it is the one item which one should never skimp on. I personally love natural vegan fabrics; I do not use leather or fur in any of my work, and am slowly cutting out silks.
Getthebuzz716: How would you define the style your line exemplifies?
Masha Ruginets:It’s elegant with a bit of edge
Getthebuzz716:What are some of your fashion goals?
Masha Ruginets:To grow my line and expand into new markets.
Getthebuzz716: What are your favorite patterns/materials [prints] to work with and why?
Masha Ruginets:I love dyeing my own fabric. Starting out with a black canvas (white fabric) is the most fun I can have as a designer, I feel like a painter which is my other love.
