Farrah Fawcett items to be donated to the Smithsonian; red bathing suit included

Wednesday, the infamous red bathing suit that actress Farrah Fawcett wore in the 1976 poster is being donated to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History for the popular culture history collections, along with many other items from her career.

The poster showed Farrah Fawcett smiling up at the camera in a red bathing suit and it sold over 12 million copies.  The poster became easily recognizable in the 1970s. The Smithsonian's website posted information about the collection Wednesday morning.

Ryan O’Neal, with whom Fawcett had a long relationship will attend the ceremony to showcase the new items.  Donated items related to Fawcett include: an original copy of the infamous 1970s poster, a leather-bound book of her scripts from the first season of "Charlie's Angels," and several magazines with Fawcett on the cover.

Fawcett died at 62 years old in 2009 on the same day that Michael Jackson died.
