Today’s episode of Farmhouse Rules, with Nancy Fuller, the born and raised farm girl from Upstate New York is titled “Weekend With the Grandkids.” Her recipes called rules are farm recipes handed down from generations. Now through the magic of television, she can share these tasty treats with viewers and teach them something too.
In this delightful episode, Nancy is in her car with three of her thirteen grandkids, Emma, Bailey and John. It is the last weekend before school starts and rather than make typical summer food, she is going to make Great Granny’s Meatloaf Sliders and Grammy Karl’s Potato Salad for dinner and for dessert, a delicious Fruit Cobbler with the season’s best peaches and blueberries. After the meal, they will be going to the county fair.
So Nancy and the kids stopped at her friend Ella’s farm for fresh milk and eggs. While there, the kids got a chance to feed the calves from big milk bottles.
When they arrived home, Nancy took them down to the creek to join their dad, her son John, who was catching crawfish. Then Nancy came back to the kitchen to prepare the dinner for the hungry bunch. She also recalled that her great-great grandmother always made meatloaf, and it was a staple of her growing up. She used three meats for the meatloaf; veal, pork and bison. She also stated that too many parents give children choices these days, back when she was growing up and when she raised her children, they ate what was put in front of them. She made a glaze for the meatloaf before putting it in the oven that contained brown sugar.
When the meatloaf was done, she took it out of the oven to set and Nancy went to visit her friend Russ Bartolotta, who has the best peaches in the Hudson Valley. Nancy got to pick her own peaches as Russ took her for a ride on the picking tractor. As Nancy bit into one, it was so juicy and big, no wonder she couldn’t resist.
When she returned, the kids were anxious to help, and help they did. Nancy has an array of cooks in her future who she can hand down her legacy, just as the recipes she makes were handed down to her.
While David was grilling the meatloaf, Nancy made the potato salad, and the kids set the table. The potato salad was rustic and farmy, just like Nancy.
As the cobbler was making the house smell delicious, she made the cinnamon flavored whipped cream for the topping, Nancy, David, John and his wife and the three kids had a wonderful meal. They visited the county fair and had lots of fun on the rides, the games of chance and winning prizes. After the weekend was over, and Nancy was happy that they had a last hurrah before the start of school; she got to sit and enjoy a grown-up drink with David on this episode of Farmhouse Rules.
