A woman was horseback riding on the shoulder of the Route 75 when a local truck hit them, killing both the rider and the horse. The accident occurred early Saturday morning, September 28, at 6:40 a.m. Kathryn M. Tyrrell, 49, of Hickox Road in Eden, New York, was killed instantly.
The farm truck that struck the horse and rider down was rounding a curve and struck them from behind, according to Eden police Lt. John McCarthy. He said that Tyrell was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Cleanup and accident investigation kept the road closed until just about noon.
McCarthy said, “Neither Tyrrell nor the horse displayed any type of reflective material on.”
He also mentioned that the farm truck was carrying animal feed and was traveling between farms.
A short time before the accident, another driver nearly hit them and had to take “evasive action” to avoid striking them.
The accident continues to be investigated by the Eden police and the accident investigation unit of County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver of the farm truck was not injured.
