Healthy living should be affordable in any location, including on the streets of our own San Francisco, which cradle the lives of many on public assistance.
An interview with Noah Gittell, the Government Affairs Officer from PCRM (Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine) is ripe with juicy details about the problems with the Farm Bill, the SNAP (food stamps) program, and the complications of their intersection, and how they affect our food prices as well as the options for those less fortunate who depend on public assistance for meeting their nutritional needs.
It is common knowledge that one of the drawbacks of the current operation of these programs is the emphasis on getting calories into hungry people at the expense of good nutrition.
The goal of PCRM is to change this. The idea is to build policy that fosters quality and healthy choices. In the long run, expenses should be less as health care costs drop rather than spiraling as they are on current food assistance programs.
The Farm Bill status is intimately woven into this set of problems as well.
