To celebrate the approaching arrival of spring, USA Today launched their 10 Best Readers’ Choice “Best Public Garden” competition. Twenty gardens in the U.S. were selected as nominees, and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is one of them. Fairchild is asking the community to cast their vote. A person can vote once a day by visiting www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-public-garden during the run of the contest, now through March 31. Voting is free, and there is no need to register. Winners will be announced on April 2.

Other nominees include renowned attractions like the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Huntington Botanical Gardens, and Longwood Gardens. Fairchild is one of only two tropical gardens selected and is the sole garden representing Florida. The sunshine and warm weather allow visitors to experience the best of Miami’s flora and fauna year-round, something not all gardens are lucky enough to have.

Since its opening in 1938, Fairchild has invited the community to explore its 83-acre haven of tropical plants in Coral Gables with exhibits like the Rainforest, Palmetum, Butterfly Garden, and water lily pools. Dedicated to environmental education and furthering research on the tropics, Fairchild opened the Science Village in December 2012 to foster scientific exploration and discovery for all ages. The Wings of the Tropics exhibit is one of the newest attractions and features thousands of exotic butterflies from Central America, South America, and Asia.

Twenty American gardens were nominated for the contest and Fairchild is the only garden representing Florida. "We want to show the country how beautiful gardens in the Sunshine State can be," said Brooke LeMaire, Fairchild marketing associate. "Please vote for Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and show the beauty of Florida’s landscapes and gardens to the rest of the country."

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to exploring, explaining and conserving the world of tropical plants. The world-renowned plant collections feature palms, cycads, orchids, tropical fruit trees and more. Fairchild has the largest education program of any metropolitan area, reaching more than 200,000 schoolchildren each year with environmental programs like The Fairchild Challenge. It aims to inspire a greater knowledge and love for plants and gardening so that all can enjoy the beauty and bounty of the tropical world. Special events include Chocolate, Mango, Orchid and Edible Garden Festivals in addition to an annual art exhibition, concerts, plant sales and more. Fairchild is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables, FL 33156. For more info, call 305-667-1651 or visit www.fairchildgarden.org.
