Fargo-Moorehead falls 8-6 to Flyers in first half of doubleheader

The softball hangover from the night before must have worn off in time for the first half of the doubleheader against Fargo-Moorhead Tuesday afternoon.

The Flyers (29-34) defeat the RedHawks (33-28 8-6 at Alexian Field while 2,675 tame fans looked on. The doubleheader is the beginning of a long stretch for the Flyers as they will play 21 games over the next 20 days, with 14 of them at home, as they battle for a spot in the playoffs.

Newcomer LF Lyndon Poole made a fast impression on the team during his first day as a Flyer. The Applebee’s Player of the Game went 3-3 with 3 hits and 2 RBI, as well as being the only Flyer to get three hits during the game.

The Flyers bats really exploded during the second inning when they scored 7 runs and clubbed 7 hits. Every Flyer except for 3B Tony Mansolino and C Craig Maddox got a hit during the inning, with the majority coming from Poole and RF Victor Ferrante.

Poole got his first RBI and hit of his Flyers career when he doubled to right field to score LF Jeff Dunbar and C Richard Mercado to tie 2-2 against RedHawks RHP Garry Bakker.

The RedHawks had more even scoring throughout the game with 1 run in the first, 1 run in the second, 2 runs in the fourth and 2 runs in the sixth. RedHawks 2B Carlo Cota provided some oomph in the fourth inning when he spanked a 2-run shot downtown to left center. The blast brought the ‘Hawks within three of tying the game at 7-4.

RedHawks PH/C Alan Rick also got a 2-run home run of his own when he hit one out of the park to right field against Flyers RHP Kris Jiggits. Rick’s offensive efforts just weren’t enough to capture the lead and the ‘Hawks finished the game 8-6.

RedHawks LHP Scott Koerber pitched in relief after Bakker exited in the fifth. Koerber faced 1 batter and got him out before the Flyers pitcher finished up the game in the top of the seventh.

Flyers starting southpaw Carmen Pignatiello (5-7) got the win, while Bakker (4-4) got the loss and Flyers RHP Cephas Howard (3-1) got the save.

Frequent Flyers Miles: Flyers RF Victor Ferrante got his 12th home run and 46th RBI of the season when he hit a 2-run blast to left center during the second inning…Flyers RHP Cephas Howard got his 4th save of the season and 4th of his career…Poole had one game start with the Las Vegas 51s (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League before coming to the Flyers...The 21-year-old Poole has spent the previous three seasons in rookie ball with the Dodgers organization.
