Alter, famous for surfboards and Hobie Cat’s passed away last week at the age of 80. Revered by surfers, sailors and skaters, Alter made a huge impact on all three disciplines.

Alter started as a surfboard shaper, and in the late 1950’s transitioned from balsa boards to the lighter foam board blanks. These lighter blanks made surfing more available to almost everyone, and the sport blossomed across not only in the US, but the world.

Alter later moved into sailing, creating the Hobie 14, a one person catamaran, and later to the Hobie 16 catamaran, one of the most popular boats in the world. The Hobie 16 became so famous and popular that today it is in the Sailboat Hall of Fame.

In the tradition of watermen worldwide, there will be a ”Paddleout” to celebrate Alter on April 18th at Doheny Beach. All are welcome to paddle out on their boards or to join by sea in a boat. The ceremony will take place from 4PM to 7PM. Parking fees have been waived during the paddleout by Doheny Park.

Alter was influential not only for his design successes, but also because he was an all-around nice guy.

His phrase “Have a Hobie Day” resonates on the water around the world.

The planned farewell is a great tribute to a true icon of the water world.

Go boating, go surfing, go sailing and have a great day!
