Fare tracking, Get a refund after you purchase your ticket

If you have heard the recent news about travelers who bought airfare and later went back to the airline carrier to successfully obtain a rebate on their already purchased flights, you probably heard it right. A growing number of travel companies are making it easier to get a partial refund even after you have already booked your ticket.

Traveloctiy.com recently implemented a program offering automatic reimbursements to customers who have booked a vacation package when using their site by May 31st.  Apparently other companies took notice of the benefit and reward, and you can now find a similar arrangement offered by priceline.com if you book on their site by June 1st. Airline carriers did not fail to notice, and refunded partial fares to travelers who asked.

By using your confirmation number, you can visit www.yapta.com and they will automatically track the price of your ticket, taking the airlines fees into consideration. If the price drop exceeds the fees yapta will send you, without any charge, an email message or a twitter alert notifying you of the lower fare rate. You can then call the airline to receive the refund, or pay yapta $15 to do it for you on weekdays. If you chose to handle the refund yourself, act fast! If you delay in making the call for too long, the fare could go back up, and you miss out on the chance to get that refund back.

Yapta reports that travelers who use their services on average save $306. Reimbursements can be anywhere from $10 to $500.

Orbitz.com also offers a refund service called Price Assurance, with refunds from $5 up to $250 a traveler, if another customer books the same ticket on the same site for less. Since Orbitz started the service last June, it reported price drops on more than 4,600 routes and has sent out just as many refunds.

Tracking your own fare is beneficial for two reasons. One, you can indeed become one of the lucky ones who receive a refund after a ticket is purchased. Two, you have the satisfaction of seeing fares go up and can appreciate your timing in making your purchase which does not offer a refund, but still kept your hard earned money in your pocket.

Where ever you go, I wish you happy and safe travels.
