Fantasy NBA Basketball 1-on-1: Billups vs. Stuckey

Denver Fantasy Sports Examiner Kyle Vamvakas and Detroit Fantasy Sports Examiner Darwin (Deni) Martin go 1-on-1 to figure out who has more fantasy value: Nuggets PG Chauncey Billups or Pistons PG Rodney Stuckey.

The players were matched up head-to-head in each of the eight typical categories used in fantasy basketball leagues, with the Nuggets’ Billups prevailing 5-3 over Stuckey. The statistics are broken down below.

Darwin (Deni) Martin offers his analysis of the match-up below. (Kyle Vamvakas’ analysis)

What did you expect to find coming into this 1-on-1?
I expected Billups to win simply because he has more experience at point guard than Stuckey. Both players have strengths and weaknesses, so the 5-3 result wasn’t surprising to me. Each of them contribute differently to the success of their respective teams.

What is your assessment of Billups’ fantasy value?
Billups’ fantasy value is tremendous. I was startled when the Pistons traded him and two other players for Allen Iverson in November, 2008. He is a leader on the court, a point scorer when he has to be and a reliable point guard. His fantasy value went up when he joined the Nuggets, because he seemed like the missing piece in their playoff run puzzle

What is your assessment of Stuckey’s fantasy value?
Stuckey’s fantasy value has climbed, because he has consistently gotten better. He’s not Steve Nash, but he can rebound. He’s often smart in his shot selection, which explains why he’s not going to lead the league in 3-pointers. I agree that he definitely has value as a 2nd or 3rd point guard on someone’s fantasy team.

Do you see their current statistical trends changing at all over the course of the season?
Billups’ shooting percentage will climb when we reach the “prime time” of the NBA season. It’s only November and there’s a lot of basketball to be played. Stuckey will get better in scoring and assists but at his usual slow, measured pace.

Which player would you prefer to have on your own fantasy team?
Billups. Depending on your draft position, he could be your #1 or #2 point guard. Realistically, Stuckey is a #2 or #3 point guard. I believe each player will appreciate in value as the fantasy basketball season progresses, but you don’t win your fantasy league based on players’ potential. You draft with a player like Billups penciled in as your starting point guard and add Stuckey to your team in the later rounds.
