Week 1 of the 2013 fantasy football season has been a very high scoring week, with numerous players having outstanding games. The surprise of the Minnesota Vikings vs. Detroit Lions game on Sunday, Sept. 9, was that both Adrian Peterson and Reggie Bush were the two highest fantasy point getters of the week, but it was Bush with the better numbers.
Here is a look at the top running backs in the Sunday games from week one of the fantasy football season.
Reggie Bush – There were thoughts that Reggie Bush would be good in Detroit, but no one could have expected him to outplay Adrian Peterson in the first game of the 2013 NFL season. Bush ran for 90 yards in the game, but picked up 101 more yards through the air on eight catches. Bush had two touchdowns called back, but in PPR leagues, he was still the best runner in week one.
Adrian Peterson – On the other side of the field, Adrian Peterson looked like he had a great game, but numbers are deceiving. He finished with 93 yards and three touchdowns. Of course, those are huge numbers, but he gained 78 of those yards on the first play of the game. Still, the touchdowns mean this was still a big win for Peterson’s fantasy football owners.
Shane Vereen – Stevan Ridley was supposed to be the star in the New England Patriots backfield this year, but he has fumbled one too many times. Bill Belichick finally yanked him from the game and put in Shane Vereen, who responded with 101 rushing yards as well as seven receptions for 58 yards. He probably won the starting job in this game.
Joique Bell – For a passing team like the Detroit Lions, it might seem strange to see two running backs from the team on this list. However, Joique Bell had a great game alongside Reggie Bush. While two of Bush’s touchdowns were called back, Bell came in and mopped up with two touchdowns on 25 rushing yards. He also had five receptions for 67 yards to make him a solid PPR flex player.
DeMarco Murray – DeMarco Murray never saw the end zone, but he ran hard and consistent the entire game. He finished up with 86 rushing yards and 39 receiving yards on eight receptions. That gave him 125 combined yards, and in PPR leagues, a 20 point fantasy football game.
David Wilson – You can probably bet that David Wilson lost his starting running back job with the New York Giants after fumbling the ball twice in the game with the Dallas Cowboys. Wilson finished with 19 yards on seven carries and then was pulled from the game after his second fumble.
