The Austin-based genre film festival, the largest genre film festival in the U.S., opens Thursday at the brand new Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline located in north Austin.
The ninth edition of the festival will run through Sep. 26 and feature dozens of films from various genres including sci-fi, horror and fantasy.
The festival also features several film related events this year including a "Doug Benson Movie Interruption" of "The Rundown,", a special Fantastic Fest edition of the Austin classic "Master Pancake" movie mockery show and the annual riots that are the "Fantastic Debates" and "Fantastic Feud" competitions.
This year's "Fantastic Debates" features a bout between Alamo Drafthouse Founder/CEO Tim League and "Man of Tai Chi" director/actor Keanu Reeves. The 2013 edition of the "Fantastic Feud", a Family Feud like game about movie trivia, will (hopefully) feature the return of game favorite "Timecrimes" director Nacho Vigalondo to the international team as the festival regular had to miss the 2012 edition of the festival.
To put a stamp on the countdown to the festival, Fantastic Fest organizers added three new films to the festival lineup with Ti West's "The Sacrament" leading the announcement. While the festival film schedule has been made available to the public, the three new films have yet to be added to the detailed schedule. Expect those additions in the coming days.
Also announced on Tuesday was the full celebrity and announced guest list for the festival with the various representatives listed in alphabetical order. Unfortunately, director Errol Morris who was scheduled to receive his "Badass Hall of Fame" award during a screening of his Donald Rumsfeld doc "The Unknown Known", will be unable to attend the festival due to a family matter. Morris' film will still screen and his award will still be presented as scheduled with an expected video from Morris to accompany the presentation.
