But Wright’s fans are not going to stand for that any longer. According to a report in The Boot on Oct. 16 fans have started a petition to have Chely Wright reinstated to the Opry. The petition asks supporters to add their online signature to a pre-written statement.
The philanthropic Chely Wright has leant her support to numerous military and charitable causes over the course of her career. The online petition makes reference to Wright’s considerable contributions, saying in part, “Have you forgotten her contribution to the industry? Not only has she written hit songs for herself. She has written for and co-written songs with many of your current performers and members.”
In today’s country music world it is difficult enough for the legendary women over 40 who paved the way for the superstars of today to get air time for their music, but due to the “industry’s collective fear of the consumer’s expected homophobia” it makes it even more difficult for Chely Wright to gain public support for her singing and songwriting ability.
Historically, powerful Nashville insiders have not been supportive of gay and lesbian artists. When K.d. Lang came out as a lesbian in 1992 she was shunned by the country music industry. Wright says she has received some private support from industry people in Nashville, but that there is a real need for greater public support for the LGBT community in the country music industry.
