Steve Yzerman. Sergei Fedorov. Niklas Lidstrom. Brendan Shanahan. Chris Chelios. Just a few of the greats who took to the ice for the Alumni Showdown between the Red Wings and the Maple Leafs at Comerica Park on Tuesday, December 31st.
Playing for a roaring crowd of over 30,000 people, the cold wasn't going to keep anyone from reliving perhaps some of the greatest moments of their past. Growing up in Detroit, it's hard not to say that the Red Wings were a part of your childhood. Whether you watched with your family and friends, or secretly stayed up late because they went into overtime, there was nothing like watching your favorite player charge down the rink to score the winning goal. This is what the Alumni games elicited. A nostalgic feeling of victory, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. The "good ol' days."
The Red Wings won the first game with a score of 5-4, and the second 6-5. Hall of Famer Scotty Bowman coached the Red Wings and Pat Quinn directed the Maple Leafs.
The Alumni Showdown was part of the Winter Festival in Detroit leading up to the Winter Classic between the current Detroit Red Wings and Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium on Wednesday, January 1st, 2014.
