The long awaited casting of the film adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey” has been announced but there are some fans who are not happy with the casting of Christian Grey. Fans of the erotic novel already have the perfect image of Grey and it is not actor Charlie Hunnam who has been cast in the role. According to the Los Angeles Times on September 3, fans have created an online petition on Change.org arguing that actor Matthew Bomer is better suited for the role.
The same fans also have their perfect Anastasia Steele. Instead of Dakota Johnson, Alexis Bledel is believed to be a better fit in the role of the main character from the bestselling E.L. James’ novels. The casting is pretty much set in stone and the petition isn’t likely to change anything except to cause more controversy surrounding the movie.
The petition, however, has gained over 10,000 users in less than 24 hours, but what is more interesting is that Bomer, a gay actor, stirred controversy when he was initially rumored as a frontrunner in the role. Writer Brett Easton condemned the idea of a gay actor playing the role of the sexually-charged straight character. Easton believed casting Bomer would complicate the role simply because of his sexuality. But fans disagree.
The petition describes Matt Bomer “as the perfect description of Christian Grey”. Although Bomer wasn’t in any serious discussions about the role, it did bring up the issue of gay actors being discriminated against when it came to casting for lead straight roles. Apparently it only matters who Christian Grey is on screen and not what the actor playing him does in his personal life.
When “Fifty Shade of Grey” hits the big screen next summer, Charlie Hunnam will be Mr. Grey. But in fantasies of at least 10,000 fans, Matt Bomer fits the description of the man they have drawn up in their minds.
