Actors have been cast in the roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele for the upcoming movie adaptation of "Fifty Shades of Grey" and the choices are shocking. On September 3, Entertainment Weekly reported that fans are in an uproar and have taken to social media to air their unhappiness over the announcement. Considering the way the book originated and the speculation over casting, the announcement was a huge surprise.
Many who read "Fifty Shades of Grey" know that the book is an adaptation of fan fiction written by E.L. James about a scene from Twilight. That said, when Charlie Hunnam of "Sons of Anarchy" fame was cast in the role of Christian Grey, fans did a collective "huh?" For several months, fans have mulled over the possibilities in the casting of Grey. Many top contenders were Ian Somerhalder, Matt Bomer, Henry Cavill and Alexander Skarsgard. Even E.L. James herself said that Robert Pattinson was her first choice for the role. Of course that would be weird, since he was the inspiration for the story in the first place and it was based on his role in "Twilight."
Additionally, Dakota Johnson playing Anastasia Steele is less shocking but still comes from out of nowhere. Fan favorites for that role were Alexis Bledel, Nina Dobrev, Emma Stone and Amanda Seyfried. Dakota Johnson, whose mother is Melanie Griffith, just seems like an odd choice to play this role. Once the movie version of this erotic tale is released, viewers will be able to see if the casting choices were good or not. In the meantime, they just seem off.
E.L. James has also taken to social media to defend the casting choices for this movie. She tweeted a message to fans saying, "“To all the supporters, lovers and haters — thank you so much for the passion you have for this project. You all rock. All of you." As well, "Fifty Shades" producer Dana Brunetti also took to Twitter to tell fans, "There’s a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actors etc. So if your favorite wasn’t cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective.”
Despite explanations given by those involved with production of the film, fans are still in an uproar. A petition has been created on change.org asking those involved to change the casting and give the Christian Grey role to Matt Bomer and the Anastasia Stelle role to Alexis Bledel instead. More than 13,000 people have signed the petition at this time, which is amazing considering the creator had an original goal of 10,000 signatures.
