Wrestling fans -- never ones to be shy about sharing their opinions -- now have the opportunity to weigh in on the order of the last three matches for the 2013 NWCA All-Star Classic Nov. 2, event sponsor the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced Tuesday.
The NWCA has announced that fans will be able to vote online to help determine the order of the last three weight classes at the event, to be held Saturday, Nov. 2 at George Mason University's Patriot Center outside Washington, D.C.
In an online poll at the NWCA website, the coaches' organization asks, "Which All-Star Classic match are you most looking forward to?"
Fans may choose the 141-pound match featuring Virginia Tech's Devin Carter vs. Iowa's Tony Ramos... or, at 149, a battle of NCAA champs between Oklahoma's Kendric Maple and Ohio State's Logan Stieber... or the 165 bout between Penn State's David Taylor and Iowa State's Michael Moreno... or the 174-pound match featuring Oklahoma's Andrew Howe and Penn State's Matt Brown... or the heavyweight bout between college rivals Mike McMullan of Northwestern, and Minnesota's Tony Nelson (pictured here).
Fans have from now to Sunday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. Eastern to cast their vote.
"We really want to make sure that fans are a key part of the All-Star Classic,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “We are looking at several strategies to improve the fan experience and we hope this will help build interest in the event.”
Following the vote, totals will be presented to the All-Star Committee to help determine the final weight class order. The official line-up order will be announced Tuesday, October 29.
The vote means that fans can help break from the tradition of conducting all matches in weight order, from lightest to heaviest... and save the most-anticipated bouts for last, much like mixed martial arts events that feature the top-of-the-card match-ups for the end of the evening, with the idea of building fan excitement and hold attention for the duration of the event.
Back in August, legendary wrestler Wade Schalles -- a two-time NCAA champ and two-time All-Star winner for Clarion University – asked visitors to his website to post the match-ups they'd want to see at the 2013 All-Star Classic, asking, “Which ones would you drive two hours to see?”
The current NWCA line-up features 18 All-Americans with a combined 10 NCAA Division I titles and 32 medals.
