Joss Whedon created Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The following T.V. show went on to have much more success. This video by The Whedon Fan is a great introduction to the show. BTVS ran from 1997–2003. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer show starred Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Giles (her Watcher/Librarian), and her new Sunnydale friends Willow and Xander. Buffy and her mother, Joyce, moved to Sunnydale after Buffy burned down the gym at her old school. She is seen as a troubled teen and her nighttime habit of Vamp killing doesn't really lend to good grades.
The group of friends (The Scooby Gang) gets larger as the show progresses. Characters like Angel, Faith, Cordelia, Oz, Anya, Dawn, Spike, Tara, Riley, and on, show up and/or grow more important through the seven seasons of the show. Angel even got his own show.
BTVS showed teens growing into adulthood, had awesome monsters, showed powerful women, was openly LBGT supportive, and had many nerdy references and puns. It is no surprise it became so popular.
It has been over ten years since the show ended, though Buffy and Angel are continuing in comics. As long as it has been since the last episode aired, the internet is still covered in ravenous fans.
