Everyone remembers the famous pig, named "Wilbur" from the children's tale Charlotte's Web. But did you know that New Jersey has a famous "Wilbur" the pig also? New York City's Mayor Michael Bloomberg's daughter, Georgina, adopted a pig from the Bergen County Animal Shelter after Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey. "Wilbur" became quite famous in February when several New York City residents were being threatened with having their pigs seized and destroyed due to a law forbidding New Yorkers from owning pigs. Many of the pig owners pointed to the fact that Ms. Bloomberg brought her pig to Gracie Mansion on Thanksgiving to meet the Mayor. So
"Wilbur" has brought this law into light recently.
But "Wilbur" is not the only famous adoption out of the Bergen County Animal Shelter. Many of you that watched the Superbowl this year saw the puppies at the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet. Bergen County was chosen by Animal Planet to send four German Shepherd mix puppies to the 2013 event. These puppies (Cruz, Prince, Tuck, and Eli) were among 63 puppies picked out from animal shelters throughout the country. Their story began when the litter of six puppies were left abandoned outside the Bergen County Animal Shelter. Eli made it into the starting line-up. All of the puppies were taken in, vaccinated, spayed/neutered and adopted out of the shelter before the Puppy Bowl aired. The promotion brought great exposure to the animal shelter with an increase in shelter adoptions.
Although not all adoptions from shelters will be as famous as these, there are many animals waiting in shelters throughout the country awaiting for their fur-ever home. Consider adopting from your local animal shelters. Also, remember that this is a life-time commitment and not something that should be taken lightly. Responsible pet ownership includes proper care (feeding, cleaning, play time, veterinary care as necessary, etc.). Too many animals are returned to animal shelters yearly after someone takes home their pet and decides it is too much work. Take into consideration your life style and the amount of time you have to give to your new pet before selecting the appropriate pet for you and your family.
