California’s huge annual Family Winemakers tasting event has relocated to San Mateo for its 24th year on August 17. This year they will be at the San Mateo County Event Center, welcoming trade, wine media and consumers to the biggest event ever. This also makes the event more open to wine lovers on the Peninsula and South Bay.

This year visitors can sample from a diverse group of wines from 160 California wineries, 32 of which will be pouring for the first time at the event. In addition, there will be number of wines above $75 from a select number of wineries in the specialty ticketed area called the iSip Lounge.

Family Winemakers of California is the political and policy voice for small family-owned wineries. We lobbied water issues, fees and taxes, warning labels, farmer’s market tastings and farming regulations this year at the State Capitol and regulatory agencies. Continuing Pierce’s Disease and Red Blotch research remain at the top of our advocacy list. Consumers enjoy greater choice in California wines across the U.S. because of their advocacy. Artistry and passion are the hallmark of Family Winemakers of California wineries at these tastings and you will taste it in the glass.

Since its inception in 1991, and as the largest of three California tasting events, the Family Winemakers tasting has always been a unique opportunity to experience the winemaking craftsmanship of vintners from across the state. This year’s winery lineup includes well-known favorites and smaller boutique wineries waiting to be discovered, all representing the vast and exhilarating world of wine in California.

New this year is a special seminar with Master Sommelier Evan Goldstein on August 17 from 11:30 to 12:30. This seminar, "Not the Usual Suspects: Unexpected Wines from Expected Places/Producers and Expected Wines from Unexpected Places/Producers," features a blind tasting of eight different California wines from across the state that go against the grain. The seminar fee of $50 Includes: instruction, eight wine tastings, and cheeses. There are a limited number of tickets available!
