"The Sound of Music Live" event starring Carrie Underwood aired Thursday evening on NBC. According to ABC News yesterday, the real-life Von Trapp family had serious misgivings with the casting of Underwood as Maria, the beloved matriarch, and it would appear they were correct.
The Reality TV Examiner does not profess to be any type of film, musical or television critic, but is however a longtime fan of the classic 1965 feature, “The Sound of Music” with Oscar-winner Julie Andrews. So it is understandable how fans would have mixed emotions regarding NBC’s "The Sound of Music Live” presentation. Myles von Trapp Derbyshire, the great grandson of Maria, explained to ABC News why the entire Von Trapp family had qualms with the remake and the decision to cast Underwood in the famous role.
Von Trapp didn’t understand why the classic tale that surrounds his family was to be remade in the first place, and was hesitant to see Carrie Underwood as the last celluloid rendition of his great grandmother. He took no issue with her vocal prowess, which was evident in the live airing, however the smooth Soprano inflection of Julie Andrews’ voice was missing. Myles and the Von Trapps had issues with Underwood’s lack of acting experience and her characteristic “tabloid image”.
It's just upsetting that this could potentially be the final broadcast of our story. And although her voice is amazing, she doesn't have acting experience…. It's just the overall image, she's a country star, she won "American Idol", she's very public in kind of a tabloid way.
Von Trapp was correct in his assumption. Carrie Underwood’s acting was as flat as cardboard. The actors that portrayed the Von Trapp children were adorably talented, but it was Audra McDonald as the Mother Abbess who stole the show and breathed life into “The Sound of Music Live”.
As Myles tells it, the entire family had reservations, including his Aunt Francoise von Trapp who blogged her trepidation. The Von Trapp family felt Anne Hathaway would have made a better fit for “The Sound of Music Live”, but sadly it is now too late.
