Salt Lake City has a lot to offer family travelers on a budget that don't want to sacrifice location just to get a good deal. There are lots of great places to visit and experiences to have together as a family. (Stay tuned for my upcoming series on this!) And when it comes to hotels, there are so many options. One great one that my family of five and I have found is the University Guest House at the University of Utah. This hotel is not only for travelers on university business or students or their families. It is open to everyone.
My family and I stayed here last summer and loved it so much, we're heading back this summer again! Not only is it right off the light rail line, convenient to the campus for games, downtown and Park City, but it also has spectacular views of the valley from its perch up on the side of the mountain. (At night my kids marveled at how pretty all of the lights were! Be sure to ask for a room facing the valley.) Plus, they have a wonderful free coffee bar that is open all day for caffeine pick me ups. (It was all Starbucks products!) The breakfast was good, and free. Standard breakfast fare, but quality tasting. The customer service couldn't be better.
The room we stayed in had two queen beds plus a sofa. (They also have other options with kitchens.) The beds were really comfy, with nice sheets. The tub was a nice size. And there was a mini fridge to keep our drinks.
There is a workout facility but no pool. There's free parking. and a small little a U gift store for all of you alums. The area is safe and secure - plus quiet!
On top of all of these things, the price was very reasonable. Much cheaper than most other places for a family of five in the downtown area. Check out the rates for the season you'll travel in at universityguesthouse.com.
