The Family Support Organization held a Barbecue and School Supply Giveaway.
The Family Support Organization of Essex County (FSOEC) is a community-based, family-driven and family-focused organization. Since its inception, FSOEC has been dedicated to ensuring that families have a voice at all levels of the child behavioral health system of care.
They provide peer support, education and advocacy for parents and caregivers of children who have emotional and/or behavioral challenges. Their goal is to empower parents and caregivers to take control of their lives by building on their strengths and supporting them where needed.
FSOEC ensures that families receive the support and education they need to become effective advocates for their children and to make progress toward their goals.
On this sunny day, FSOEC held their annual Back to School fair. There were many vendors in attendance such as Essex County College, Programs for Parents and Spann. Each table had plenty of brochures and flyers to give out to the participants. All the information that we received was full of community resources that a parent could utilize in seeking help with various issues.
Although the main attraction was the free school supply giveaways, there was plenty of other activities for the participants to engage in. FSOEC provided delicious barbecue and many other items for consumption. If too much food was consumed, there was an opportunity for the participants to work off their caloric intake by participating in a rigorous Zumba workout.
This was a great event that should have attracted more participants especially those with school age children. School supplies are relatively expensive. Participating in this event could have eliminated parents need to purchase school supplies. With the free giveaway, parents could apply the money they saved and utilized it on other school related items.
