A family smokes on a plane and refused to stop when asked by flight attendants. That family was traveling from Halifax to the Dominican Republic but the plane was diverted to Bermuda. On Feb. 4, FOX 8 reported that the family was arrested while on the plane once it landed.
"It appeared to be a father, a mother and a son. The parents appear to be in their 50s. The son, I believe, is around 22 or so," said acting Insp. Paul Simons. The family hid their cigarettes somewhere and were taking turns smoking in the bathroom on the plane. It is unknown why they refused to stop smoking or why they were purposely disobeying the rules.
The family that smoked on a plane will likely face charges and could be fined. The incident happened on board a Sunwing Airlines flight and when the three smokers were confronted, passengers say that they became verbally abusive (via CBC News).
"I cannot believe that passengers did this. I'll bet you it's been 20 years since smoking was allowed on an aircraft. I couldn't believe it when I heard it. I said, 'No, no, what did you say?'" said Daryl McWilliams, the vice-president of media relations with the airline. A lot of people are surprised by this news, not unlike McWilliams.
The family members who smoked on the plane have not been identified.
