Family smokes on plane, arrested after flight makes unscheduled landing

A family smokes on a plane and gets arrested after their flight makes an unscheduled landing at L.F. Wade International Airport, which is the only airport in Bermuda.

The three related individuals were caught smoking in the bathroom of an airplane bound for the Dominican Republic from Halifax. When they exited the washroom, they were confronted by airline staff who demanded to know where the threesome had disposed of their cigarette butts, but the trio refused to cooperate, according to a Feb. 2, 2013 report by CBC News.

The family who smoked on the plane was reportedly belligerent when confronted, but whether they had been drinking or alcohol was a factor is unknown.

As a result of the family's non-cooperation, Sunwing flight 454 was diverted to Bermuda where local police were on hand to arrest the couple and their adult son. The airplane resumed its journey to Punta Cana the following day without the family on board. The family that smoked on the plane was transported to a local police station and released on bail without being formally charged.
