The body of the three-year-old cat, named "Chum," was found in a trash can on Monday night; the cat had been shot.
Chum had escaped from the family's house approximately one month ago, and had been roaming the northeastern area of the city. After the city police and the Michigan Humane Society allegedly declined to help recover the cat, two rescue agencies stepped forward to lend a hand.
Unfortunately, someone with a gun, who may have feared the large cat, who was estimated to weigh 25 pounds, got to Chum before rescuers did.
The family of the hybrid feline is said to be "devastated."
The Savannah cat, the largest breed of domesticated cats, is a cross between a domestic cat and the serval; the breed became popular with breeders in the late 1990s.
