Family reunited with missing dog four years after it disappeared

A family has been reunited with their missing pet four years after it disappeared from their backyard.

Oreo the Boston Terrier disappeared from the Guglielmelli family's backyard in Palo Alto, California, in 2008, and their hopes of seeing him again had long since faded.

But astonishingly, the Guglielmellis received a call this week to say that Oreo had been found wandering around a storage facility in Daly City, approximately 30 miles away from the family home.

The runaway pup, who has a fractured leg but is otherwise in good health, was reunited with his relieved owners after they were located through the details on his microchip.

'I had tears in my eyes. I couldn't believe it after all this time he came home,' Tammy Guglielmelli told NBC Los Angeles.

Doctors at Alta View Animal Hospital in Mountain View believe that Oreo may have been hit by a car a couple of months ago, fracturing his leg.

He was due to have surgery on Thursday and is expected to fully recover from his injury.

"The dog's healthy. The doctor's going to make him well. He's back in the family. And that's good," Larry Guglielmelli said.

The happy reunion is tinged with a small amount of sadness - Oreo's actual owner, Larry's wife Annabelle, will not be able to join in the celebrations because she passed away last April.

"I just wish the wife could have been here," Guglielmelli said. "She would have...it would have been a day for her. She never gave up. She always thought she would find him."
