Fifth in our line-up of "Family Resolutions that Matter" is the ever-important issue of caring. We often say we love our family members and we care about our family members, but how do we show it? Showing that we truly care for each other requires more than lip-service. This is one time when actions speak louder than words.
Here's an activity idea that might help your family start to pay more attention to how each member actually cares for each other.
CARING DAYS:
1. Place the name of each family member in a bag or bowl.
2. Each family member gets to draw the name of another family member, but cannot tell whose name they drew.
3. Over the course of the week, each person needs to find at least one way each day to do something kind or caring for the person whose name they drew.
4. At the end of the week, each family member gets to see if they can guess who picked his/her name.
If you need some inspiration, here are some ideas to get you started with your "caring" ways for the person whose name you drew:
~Do an extra chore ~Make lunch for the person ~Help them with their homework ~Leave a treat somewhere where they will find it (be sure to put their name on it) ~Leave a special note, saying what you like about them on their pillow ~Clear their dishes from the table ~Help them look for something they have misplaced ~Help them with homework ~If you drew a parent's name, work extra hard at doing the right thing, etc., etc.
If you have other ideas, please share with us in the comment section below.
Ideally, you may become so good at caring for your family members that you don't even need to draw names. You may just find that you participate in acts of caring without even thinking about it!
