Family Radio’s Harold Camping on Saturday came forward and apologized for failing in his prophesies that declared the end of the world, the rapture and Christ’s return. Camping had declared May 21st of this year and then October 21st as days for God’s judgment.http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/local/east_bay&id=8420460
“I should not have said that and I apologize”, Camping said on a posting for his Family Radio website.
Many of Camping’s own followers sold property and in some cases their homes to support the main messages the were claimed to be judgment day and the rapture. Camping highly advertised May 21st of judgment day that was “guaranteed” by the bible. Once that date passed, Camping was “flabbergasted” and then quickly threw out October 21st as a recalculation.
Not long after his May prediction failed, Camping suffered a stroke and has not returned to his Open Forum program that was made popular by Family Radio. There were assumptions that Camping would even retire.
Camping showed character in the admission of his error, however nothing has been suggested about returning the funds that were greatly accumulated by Family Radio due to the prophesies declared. Family Radio increased the balance sheet by $30 million dollars at least compared to the funding of the previous year.http://www.examiner.com/christian-perspectives-in-san-jose/camping-and-family-radio-produces-another-bust-it-s-time-for-accountability
Unfortunately, Camping may not be totally out of the prediction business based on the words shared during his apology. He also said, “additional language needed to be looked at before coming to a conclusion about the specific date in which the world would end”.
It could be that Camping has not learned his lesson about attempting to guess the end of the world and God’s judgment day.
