Family of child stabbing victim asking for homemade hearts

The family of the twelve year-old "Slenderman" victim are asking people to send in homemade hearts to help show the power of love as she recovers in the hospital.

In their first public statement, the child's parents said:

As parents of this little girl, we are overwhelmed with the amount of love and support we've received from our family, friends and community. Our little girl is a fighter and is improving each and every day. We appreciate your patience, love and support, as we too are stunned and saddened by this tragedy. As our daughter is so young, we ask that you honor her anonymity and our family's privacy as we continue to heal and find our strength.

She has been able to walk the halls of the hospital with her Dad. No machine, no tubes, just she and her Dad. She has been out of bed watching TV in her wheelchair as well. She seems to like sitting in her wheelchair as opposed to the lying in bed. She still gets a little ill when she eats so we're taking that slowly. She also gets overwhelmed very easily, so we're going to try to limit visitors and allow her to have a little alone time.

We thank you for keeping our family in your prayers during this difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised of updates on her progress. As our daughter is so young, we ask that you honor her anonymity and our family's privacy as we continue to heal and find our strength.

An online fundraising page has also been established to help pay for the family's medical expenses, as well as to encourage well-wishers to help cheer her up with handmade hearts as she recovers.

They write:

How can you help?

Extend blessings and love to the victim and her family by sending a homemade purple heart (her favorite color) made of paper, fabric, felted wool, etc. As you make your heart, infuse it with your prayers, Love and Light. These hearts will blanket the walls of this 12-year-old’s room, sending her a nurturing message. Be a part of surrounding her with beauty and kindness, so that she may be reminded that the power of love is greater than all else.

We can also offer much-needed assistance in helping to meet the mounting medical and legal bills that can weigh so heavily on the mind, further burdening the family. The current medical costs of ICU at the hospital are growing each day, and there is no way of knowing what lies ahead for this family. Your donation will help.
