A neighbor and a maintenance worker discover a grisly scene when they went to check on the well-being of a family of five. They opened the door of the apartment and saw a body, then called the police. The police discovered the other bodies of the family of five who were all shot dead, according to Fox News on July 28.
Neighbors said they heard what sounded like firecrackers the night before at about 11:30. They didn’t realize it was actually the sounds of the gunshots killing three children and two adults that they heard ring out.
The police found the bodies of the husband and wife, said to be in their 30s, and their three children. The two boys were twelve and seven, and a little girl, who was just four, were found shot to death in their Saco, Maine apartment, according to CBS News today.
It appears to be a murder-suicide as a detective suggested to the media. Steve McCausland, of the Maine Department of Public Safety said “All indications are that no one outside of the family was responsible for the deaths.” He also said “These are not accidental deaths.”
This is a close-knit apartment complex where the children all played together and the families were all friends. It is not known what prompted the neighbor to call the complex’s maintenance man on Sunday and ask that he do a well-being check on the family.
Another neighbor said they saw the father of the family go out on Sunday morning in his car, but he returned a short while later. That was the last time any member of the family was seen alive by the neighbors.
Police found the families bodies throughout three bedrooms in the apartment. A gun was also found at the scene described as a “long gun.” The police also recovered the shell casings.
The family was a big part of the complex community and well-liked. One woman who babysat for the three children was devastated over the news. Another neighbor said that the father of the family was the kind of guy who would “give you the shirt off his back.”
The investigation is on-going and police are expected to release the names of the victims sometime Monday afternoon. They are waiting until the family's relatives were notified before releasing the family's names to the public.
