One can find, at the Naples Zoo in Naples, Florida, one of the most rarest of tigers. There are only 55 'felines' of this kind in the nation, and it is the Malayan tiger.
The Malayan tiger is found, naturally, in the southern and central parts of the Malay Peninsula. This tiger is a subspecies of tiger found in Thailand and Malaysia.
Until 2004 the Malayan tiger was not considered a subspecies in its own right. The new classification came about after a study at the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity, part of the United States National Cancer Institute.
Since, at recent count, there are only 600-800 Malayan tigers in the wild, that makes that particular cat the most common tiger subspecies - second or third only to the Bengal and possibly also to the Indochinese tigers.
Nevertheless, the Malayan tiger is still an endangered subspecies.
For family fun and maybe even learning something as well, go to the Naples Zoo.
Note, at this zoo the Malayan Tiger Species Survival Plan is in action for the worldwide conservation of this endangered species.
There are only 55 Malayan tigers in the nation.
This is an opportunity each of us as well as the whole family does not want to miss.
