October begins with the cooler weather and the leaves starting to fall. One of the most celebrated events in Chicago during this month is Oktoberfest which celebrates German heritage.
While many associate the Oktoberfest with adult partying on German food and alcohol. This year the festival has continued to cater to more families such as the Long Grove Oktoberfest which features german food and music as well as free hayrides through the lovely town of long grove.
The weekend event on October 12-13 from 10 am-6pm is free for all ages! Long grove is set 35 miles away northwest of Chicago. The town filled with historic homes and buildings has roots going back to the 1800’s. The town has embraced it’s past and many of the local shops cater to children and families.

Objective: The objective of the lesson is to create a art piece to represent a favorite family gathering, such as family dinners, sporting events, or other family traditions.
Procedure:
1. Place the white drawing paper, finger paint, and glitter at the center of the table.
2. Start the discussion on the importance of festive family gatherings and why we spend time with loved ones during certain parts of the years. Ask the child what their favorite family gathering memory is and how they feel about this memory does it make them happy or sad? if they can use the paint to create it.
3. Ask the child to paint a picture of their preferred family gathering and use the finger paint and glitter glue to enhance their picture of this memory.
