Roeding Park has been a favorite with San Joaquin Valley residents for as long as I can remember. Thousands of Valley residents will tell a story akin to mine. That is, when I was a little girl growing up in Delano, the summer highlight for our family was a trip to the Fresno Zoo (Chaffee Zoo), Playland, and Storyland. Later in life, I shared the same joys with my own children. More recently, my grandchildren have spent the day at the Roeding Park attractions. Even if you just want a shady spot or to have fun in the park throwing something on the grill and playing ball or using the playground equipment, Roeding is a great place to do it. The current entrance fee is just $3 per vehicle (Feb.-Oct.), so load up the family, friends and neighbors and head for Roeding Park, just west of Golden State Boulevard, with entrances on Olive and Belmont Streets. There is no entrance fee Nov.-Jan.

If you plan a year in advance, you can reserve a shelter area for a reunion or other gathering. Rates are variable. The Pergola area, a beautiful wisteria-draped, tiered colonnade, has been used for countless outdoor weddings. Amplified music is permitted in reserved shelters, but park policy requires that the volume must not disturb other park users or park neighbors. In accordance with City ordinances, no alcoholic beverages, narcotics, or illegal drugs may be brought into the park. Some events may require that security guards b e hired at the expense of the reserving party. Set-up and clean-up is the responsibility of the reserving party and must be done on the day of the event.
