The Bald Head Island Chamber of Commerce announced Friday it will hold its inaugural Bluefish Bonanza, a family-friendly surfcasting tournament, on Oct.17-18, 2014 on Bald Head Island. Prizes for largest fish will be awarded in multiple categories, including Adult, Junior Angler (ages 6-15) and Pee Wee (5 and under), so the whole family can fish together.
“This family-friendly fishing weekend promises to become a premier event on the island,” said Claude Pope, President of the Bald Head Island Chamber of Commerce and President/CEO of the island’s Maritime Market. “Anglers have long made their pilgrimage to the Cape Fear in the fall to fish for bluefish, red drum and flounder, and we hope this event will introduce the sport of surfcasting to a new generation while allowing families to have a great time fishing together on Bald Head Island.”
The weekend kicks off with a fishing school geared toward all ages on Friday afternoon, followed by a welcome reception and dinner at the Harborside Pavilion. The fishing competition, which takes place along West, South and East beaches, begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and concludes at 3:30 p.m. An awards ceremony and dinner follow on Saturday evening.
The grand prize package for the Adult tournament is $3,000. The winner of the Junior Angler tournament will take home $1,500 and the Pee Wee winner will take home $500.
